Breaking Down Barriers: MIR in Vogue
In a July 2017 Vogue article entitled, “,” travel writer Michaela Trimble touched base with several intrepid tour companies that travel to once-forbidden places, believing in the power of travel to connect the world’s people, and “…hoping to dispel popular cultural bias, ultimately changing the conversation from that of fear to understanding.”
MIR Vice President Annie Lucas has a few things to say on that subject; MIR started out taking travelers to the USSR – Ronald Reagan’s “Evil Empire” – in the late 80s. And in 2016, MIR’s fastest-growing destination was Iran.
“The trepidations travelers have prior to embarking on a journey to Iran disappear once they interact one-on-one with local Iranians. They feel their expression of hospitality towards them. It’s nearly a universal comment on how gracious and friendly the local Iranians are; Americans find the hospitality totally disarming.”
“Don’t let travel bans or laptop bans turn you away,” says Lucas. “In spite of everything, this is the biggest thing we as Americans can do—travel. If we can tell others from a firsthand perspective what it’s actually like, we can counterbalance mainstream media, which tends to focus on negative and hard-hitting political issues.”
The only true way to cut through fear and bad press is to investigate a country or region for yourself, with a little help from some open-minded tour companies.
