Southeast Europe’s Balkan Crown Jewel

Set just above Greece, the Republic of Macedonia is a compact jewel of a country, blue with lakes and green with forested mountains.  Its capital city, Skopje, was around before the time of Christ.  An old song says that Macedonia is “where the sun shines forever,” and we have found it to be close to the truth.

Skopje

Macedonia’s capital and largest city, Skopje has a population of about 700,000. The area has been inhabited since the Neolithic Age and has been ruled at various times by ancient Rome, Byzantium, the First Bulgarian Empire and the Ottoman Turks. Its Ottoman influence can be seen best in the wonderful old Turkish quarter, where the teeming bazaar displays hand-loomed carpets, antique silver, spices, woven pillows and nargileh (water pipes). Old caravanserais have been transformed into traditional restaurants and little cafés and cubbyhole shops line the streets. This is where Mother Teresa was born and raised, and there is a new monument to her on the main street.

The Town of Ohrid and Lake Ohrid

Ohrid is one of the oldest human settlements in Europe, and as such, has been designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, as has the lake on whose shores it sits. First mentioned in 363 BC, the town is today a popular destination for Macedonians. Its St. Pantelejmon Monastery is the oldest Slav monastery in the world and the icon gallery in the courtyard of St. Bogorodica Perivlepta church is second only to Moscow’s famed icon collection.

Ohrid abounds with ancient archaeological sites and is surrounded by old fortifications, some from as early as the 3rd century BC. The old fortification walls include traces of four gates, one of which used to connect with the remains of Macedonia’s only ancient Greek amphitheater. Its antiquities, red-roofed old houses, beautiful setting and fabulous collection of medieval icons combine to make it a fascinating town.

Širok Sokak Street in Bitola

Bitola, one of Macedonia’s largest towns, was known as the “City of Consuls,” because in the Ottoman era, twelve countries kept consulates here. Perched on a 2,000-foot plateau at the foot of Baba Mountain, Bitola is best-known for the nearby ruins of Heraclea. Its long pedestrian Širok Sokak Street overflows with shops, cafés and neo-classical buildings.
