Back in September one of MIR’s travel specialists, Jill Schneeman, journeyed to four of MIR’s destinations in Central Europe and the Balkans with her friend Morgan – just for fun!

AustriaHer trip began in Austria’s capital city, Vienna, a city filled with imperial history and grandeur. The highlight here, besides the delicious schnitzel, was Schonbrunn Palace, which had something for everyone, including a palace, impeccable gardens, grand architecture, a labyrinth and even its own menagerie.

They caught the train down to Graz, a smaller and more relaxed city compared to the hustle and bustle of Vienna. Their favorite stop in Graz was Schlossberg, set on top of the hill, notable for its clock tower and panoramic views of the red roofed city below.

SloveniaNeither had been to Slovenia, and they were excited to visit the small, pristine country. Jill and Morgan began their exploration of the country in Ljubljana, the quaint capital city, which proved to be charismatic, accessible and historic all at the same time.

The highlight of the entire trip was their time spent at picturesque Lake Bled. They loved every moment spent at Bled, especially the experience of taking a traditional 25-person rowboat (called a pletna) out to the island, which boasts its own church and iconic steeple.

CroatiaContinuing their survey of the Balkans, the young women continued on to Zagreb, Croatia, which wooed them with its charm, wonderfully detailed Zagreb Cathedral and quirky Museum of Broken Relationships.

HungaryTheir trip came to an end in the elegant city of Budapest, Hungary. There wasn’t enough time in the day to see all that Budapest had to offer but some of their favorites were the ornate floor-to-ceiling motifs of Mathias Church and the Gothic architecture of the Parliament building. And of course, no visit to Budapest is complete without a visit to the baths, which left them refreshed from head to toe.
